Ask an IT person about your network security and the word "firewall" will come up pretty quickly. But most business owners are not entirely sure what a firewall actually does or whether they need one.
Short answer: yes. Here is the longer one.
A firewall controls what network traffic is allowed in and out of your network. Think of it as a security checkpoint between your computers and the internet. Without one, traffic flows freely in and out. With one, you can block known threats, control what gets through, and log suspicious activity.
Most small businesses have a consumer-grade router from their internet provider. This gives you very basic filtering, enough to block random internet noise, but it lacks the features that matter for business security: intrusion prevention, content filtering, detailed logging, and proper network segmentation.
ISP routers are designed for the cheapest possible deployment. They rarely receive firmware updates, have limited configuration options, and prioritize the provider's convenience over yours.
A proper business firewall device (Fortinet, pfSense, and Meraki are common options) gives you real control over your network. You can separate employee devices from guest Wi-Fi and IoT equipment. You can block categories of malicious traffic automatically. You get logs that actually tell you something useful if something goes wrong.
For most businesses with more than a handful of employees, upgrading from an ISP router to a business firewall is a worthwhile step.
A firewall is not a complete solution by itself. It will not stop a phishing attack that tricks an employee into handing over their password. It will not catch malware that arrives through an email attachment. It is one layer of protection, not the whole picture.
Good security is layered: firewall, updated software, strong passwords, multi-factor authentication, employee awareness, and solid backups all working together. Remove any one layer and you are more exposed.
