How to Set Up a Password Manager

SecurityBeginnerPublished 2026-03-26

A password manager stores your passwords securely so you only need to remember one master password. It also generates long, random passwords for every account, which means you stop reusing passwords and stop using weak ones. Using a password manager is one of the highest-impact security improvements most people can make.

Which password manager to use

  • Bitwarden: Free, open-source, and highly regarded. Works across all devices and browsers. A strong choice for most people.
  • 1Password: Paid subscription with polished apps and good family sharing features.
  • Dashlane: Another paid option with a clean interface.

Bitwarden is a solid starting point if you want something free. All three are reputable options.

How to get started

  1. Create an account at your chosen password manager's website.
  2. Set a strong master password. Write it down and keep it somewhere safe offline. If you lose it, you lose access to all your passwords.
  3. Install the browser extension on your computer and the app on your phone.
  4. Start saving passwords. When you log in to a site, the extension will offer to save the password.
  5. Over time, use the password manager to change weak or reused passwords to strong generated ones.

Start with your most important accounts

Prioritize your email account, your bank, and any account you use for work. Once those are in the manager with strong, unique passwords and two-factor authentication enabled, the rest can be converted gradually.
