WindowsBeginnerPublished 2026-02-26

Keeping Windows updated is one of the most important things you can do to keep your computer secure. Windows updates include security patches that close vulnerabilities attackers actively exploit. Enabling automatic updates means you do not have to think about it.

How to check for updates now

  1. Open the Start menu and go to Settings.
  2. Click Windows Update in the left sidebar.
  3. Click Check for updates.
  4. If updates are available, click Download and install.
  5. Restart your computer when prompted.

How to enable automatic updates

  1. In Windows Update settings, click Advanced options.
  2. Make sure Receive updates for other Microsoft products is turned on.
  3. Under Automatic updates, ensure Download updates over metered connections is enabled if you have a fast connection.
  4. Set Active hours so Windows knows when not to restart your computer automatically.

What about driver updates?

Windows Update downloads driver updates for common hardware, but for graphics cards and some other components, go directly to the manufacturer's website for the most current drivers. For NVIDIA cards, use GeForce Experience. For AMD, use AMD Software.
